The New Installed Tower Clock at BGC Taguig

We have just installed a 2-meter wide tower clock in one of the new buildings of Megaworld...the Uptown Parksuites 2 in BGC Taguig Metro Manila. The clock movement I used here is my own design called "two-wheel direct drive clock movement" meaning there are only two wheels inside... the center minute wheel that carries the minute hand and the hour wheel that carries the hour hand. Both wheels are being driven by two motors digitally controlled by a microcomputer chip and rate regulated using a quartz oscillator set at +1.44min/year using the state of the art Microset Timing Machine by Bryan Mumford. These kind of clock movement of mine is first in the Philippines and in the world.

The Lakan Tower Clock

The Lakan Tower Clock installed at PNPA SILANG is using the first Filipino idea ever made to a clock movement with only two wheels inside. The center minute wheel that carries the minute hand and the hour wheel that carries the hour hand. They are being driven by two separate motors controlled digitally by a quartz oscillator adjusted to oscillate at +1.44 min/year. During time setting of the hands...the clock is using a remote control to set both chime and time. The minute and hour hands can be adjusted independently to each other. It has an hourly Westminster melody and chime with special 5am Reveille Call and 10pm Taps inserts especially requested by the PNPAAAI Officials. After 10pm the clock goes silent until at 5am playing the Reveille Call. Backlighting is automatically controlled day and night. Making a home-made sweep second pinion.

I think one of the most difficult job that a watchmaker can do is to find a replacement part but every watch parts stores here in Manila is saying "sorry no part available". Maybe it's hard for me to say "no" to my customer especially when at the corner of my mind there is something I can do to solve the problem. It's my more than 47 years of experience in watch repairing that I can duplicate a hard-to-find part using my skill with my lathe and other tools. Now you can see at the pictures how I solved the problem making a replacement sweep second pinion of an AP chronograph watch. As you can at the last picture the new replacement part is already at the center and passed the free wheeling test. After Working on Giant Clocks...let's now work on small wrist watches.

I don't know how many watch technicians attempted to solve the problem before that Php1.7m worth of high end watch reached me. The problem is: the original defective cannon pinion got lost trying several technicians to find a replacement. They even tried to replaced the entire part with other caliber number but of course it will not fit. What we did through the help of the internet me and my son Alvin managed to find the right number of teeth and the dimension. As you can see the home made cannon pinion is already mounted in the movement. While the attempted replacement can be seen on the right side of the pictures with wrong number of teeth and an error of its dimension. The work is a success and the owner is very happy. The owner who is a mechanical engr wanted to have that clock mounted in his building because "siya lang daw ang meron niyan sa kanilang lugar."
